Study Underway

Just a quick update to call attention to an ongoing study, which you can access here.

Its purpose is to determine whether the use of topical steroids is effective in treating corneal ulcers resulting from bacterial infection. No results have been published yet, but regardless of what they find, I think it's kind of reassuring just to know that things like this are on researchers' radar.

I'm still optimistic that one day my vision will be fixed. Technology and medical knowledge have come so far already. I can't wait to see (ha) what treatment options will be available in 5 or 10 years.

  1. Hi
I found out that I have 5 scars on each eyes two years ago. I am in my 40's. I recalled one day my eyes just got horrible painfully blood shot I ever felt that was when I was in my 30's. I remembered it felt like there was some sand in my eyes. I was rushed to ER and the doctor said could not find any sand or debris at all but he said it looked like shingles when he used lens to look through my eyes. I remembered he put some eye drop to numb my eyes and IT FELT SOOO GOOD. He does not know what was wrong with my eyes. I had to shut my eyes and sleep as much as I can. I did not get any prescription because no one knows what was wrong with my eyes. Few weeks later, went to family doctor told him about my eyes. He gave me lubricant something I cannot remember what it was and also antibotics eye drop. It helped a little. He said something about eye allergy. So I went on with my life. My eye blood shot attack became seldom. Until I went for eye exam because I was starting to see double vision and that was when I found out about scarring on my cornea. I was shocked. He said I have very good vision but scarring is in the way. I was playing around to see where which angle to look for example I look far right corner of my eye it seems that vision is clear but when i look out straight it becomes blurry. I think the scarring is in my way. Another thing I noticed that day for eye exam I had light blood shot and light pain, had an eye exam that requires to put some eye drop to numb my eyes for the exam. Later after the numb wears off apparently the blood shot/pain has stopped. I was wondering if the numb eye drop helps my blood shot/pain to calm down. I asked doctor if I can get prescription for numb eye drop and he said no I cannot have it. I believe it is almost like my eyes just had a high blood pressure and needs to calm down. My health is great I always have low blood pressure but low iron that is it. Do you or anyone know if there is some type of eye drop that is similar to numb eye drops where I can buy ?? Forgot to mention, after eye exam the dr thought about try out the contact lens as "bandaid" but that time my eyes were RED. He said wait till it goes away and come back for it. When I came back he changed his mind and decided not to try it. I said yes I want to try but he said no changed mind. I got new reading glasses and it helps reduce the blurry. I am sorry for my bad grammar here as english is not my language. I hope it is still understandable. Let me know about numb eye drops out there where I can purchase ??

  2. That sounds like quite the ordeal you've been through. I have no medical training and don't have an answer about the eyedrops but it sounds like maybe you could benefit from getting a second opinion from a different ophthalmologist. Good luck!

    1. Thank you. Maybe I should try a second opinion. My friend asked me if PRK will help lessen scarring on cornea. What do you think of PRK that may help with the scarring?

  3. A second opinion couldn't hurt. I haven't had any experience with PRK myself but some folks here have: http://lasermyeye.org/forums/
